Announcing: September Shorts “My First Aveirah”
Unpious.com Staff Writer2011ContestsWe are now accepting submissions for the Unpious September Shorts Contest: My First Aveirah. A selection of up to ten submissions will be published on Unpious at the end of September. The winner will be decided via reader poll*, and receive the great honor of the title “Unpious September Shorts Winner” as well as a $25 gift card.
This is a terrific opportunity for new writers to get published and for accomplished writers to get recognized.
To participate, please read carefully and follow these rules:
- Submissions must be between 100 and 250 words.
- Submissions must be an Unpious** take on the subject of that month’s short. September’s subject is “My First Aveirah.”
- Submissions must be received by September 22nd.
- To enter, send an email to unpious.submissions@gmail.com, with the subject “September Shorts.” Paste your submission in the body of the email (no attachments please). Clearly state what name you’d like to be published under (pseudonyms are fine, but they should sound like a real name – Chani Braun is ok, Kvetchy Mama is not).
- Submissions are open to sentient beings of all religions, genders, races and creeds.
- Submissions must be previously unpublished original works by the submitter.
- Submissions may be edited by Unpious before publication.
*Unpious reserves to right to bypass poll conclusions and crown a winner based on the editorial team’s biases and discretion — although we promise to try hard to resist the impulse.
**What makes something “Unpious”? Irreverence, thoughtful examination or bold exploration of any subject related to Chasidic or ultra-Orthodox Jewish life.

Only 100-250 words for so momentous an event as a first aveira? Hardly seems fair…
what type of aveira, does it have to be chaivey krisos like eating on yom kipur, or a just a simple lav like loshon hora? what about a derabanan, or maybe we can even be meikel and a minhag or changing a lvush is also enough, after all you are definately not machmirim…
Williamsburg — It can be something as big as skipping Rabeinu Tam’s tefilin, as little as having sex with the lights on, or as medium as having a wet dream on Yom Kippur…. Or laughing on Tisha B’av… Or learning during nittel… The important thing is that it was momentous — even if its very momentousness lies in how non-momentous it was.
Drafting my submission for this was really fun. What a great idea to inspire a clutch of new writers. Knowing that one is limited to only 250 words, makes it seem a minimally demanding challenge. After all, 250 words is enough to be descriptive but means you have to stay on point. So it is a great guideline within itself. I recommend giving it a go!
Will you reject all submissions over 250 words? My piece is a bit more flash fiction than a memory. It’s about 300 words and can’t be any less.
Dov — Submit what you have and we’ll take a look.
