About this archive
Unpious (unpious.com, "Voices on the Hasidic Fringe") was an online magazine founded by Shulem Deen. It published essays, memoir, fiction, poetry, humor, reviews and news by writers in and around the Hasidic and ultra-Orthodox world, many of them under pen names, along with lively comment threads. Its last article appeared in March 2014; by early 2016 the address showed a placeholder page saying the site no longer publishes articles online.
This is an unofficial archive, made so that the writing does not disappear. It is not affiliated with Unpious, its founder, editors or writers, and all rights in the writing stay with them. Texts, titles, bylines and comments are kept exactly as they were published; only the site's menus, ads, share buttons and widgets were left out.
How it was rebuilt
Every page was recovered from public web-archive copies: the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine (most pages) and Common Crawl (a few pages missing from the Wayback Machine, plus extra comment pages). For each article the most complete copy was used, and comments were merged from every copy, including the article's comment feed.
- 490 articles recovered in full, out of 506 article addresses the site's own pages link to. The other 16 are listed on this page with whatever excerpt survives.
- 8,109 comments. Where the site's own counter shows more comments than survive, the article page says so.
- Images: 221 of 450 pictures from the site survived and are stored here; the rest were never archived.
- Dates: January 10, 2010 to March 13, 2014.
Each article links to its original copy in the Wayback Machine. Links between Unpious articles point to the copies in this archive; other links point to the Wayback Machine.
