News Round Up – Thurs. 7/14/11

Eight year old Leiby Kletzky was brutally murdered, and his dismembered remains were found on Wednesday. We are shaken by this tragedy and our hearts go out to Leiby’s loved ones.

Female Hebrew University students launched the “Grab A Spot” initiative, to protect female bus riders from enforced gender segregation, after the Israeli High Court of Justice ruled segregated buses illegal six months ago. “Wouldn’t a woman rather be among other women?” Shai, a Charedi man, told reporters. “In a mixed bus they will say they are being harassed,” Yes, Shai, segregation was mandated on “Mehadrin” buses because women were begging to sit at the back of the bus. Just like Rosa Parks.

The New York Times profiled Joe Levin, a Boboveh chasid who runs T.O.T. Private Investigation and Consulting, that specializes in frum investigations. T.O.T. stands for Tuchis afn tish, of course. Since we’ve recently been assured that Boro Park has an almost zero crime rate, we can’t imagine what Levin does with his time.

A state Supreme Court judge will be ruling on a motion to prevent New York City from rezoning the Broadway Triangle urban renewal area in Brooklyn. Activists allege that 50% of available affordable housing in the area has gone to Williamsburg Chasidim, while 90% of those waiting for affordable housing are Black and Latino. They don’t understand that Chasidim needing public housing are also major financial contributors to local politicians.

Chasidim are claiming that New York Waterways are (drumroll) anti-Semitic, because they only carry fifteen child life vests per boat, turning away women with larger groups of children. “What is this? Russia?” one outraged Williamsburger asked a reporter. What an excellent line. We’ll try that one out the next time we visit Williamsburg and are given detailed instructions on how to dress and act. “What is this? Russia?”

Probably what many of us do… snooping on “rebellious Hasidic girls in white miniskirts…”
